4-3-3

4-3-3 Possession Build-Up

A possession plan where a sweeper keeper and ball-playing centre-back circulate from the back while an Inverted Wingback steps into midfield for an overload. The False 9 drops to link play and the wide forwards attack the space it leaves.

Pros
  • Wins the numbers battle in midfield
  • Long spells of possession tire opponents out
  • False 9 drags centre-backs out, freeing the wide forwards
Cons
  • Misplaced passes at the back are punished instantly
  • Few bodies in the box make crossing weak
  • Demands high passing and vision ratings across the XI
Key Player Types
  • Sweeper keeper who is comfortable on the ball
  • Inverted fullback with strong passing (Tiki Taka PlayStyle)
  • Deep-lying playmaker with vision and long passing
  • Link-up striker for the False 9 role
Player Instructions
  1. Against a high press, use the keeper-centre-back triangle to play out and avoid forced forward passes.
  2. The Inverted Wingback tucks in to create a 3-2 build-up shape; find the deep-lying playmaker first.
  3. The moment the False 9 drops, slide a through ball to the winger or inside forward running in behind.
  4. Counter-press with the nearest player after losing the ball, but never drag a centre-back out.
  5. If you have the ball but no shots, keep the Playmaker on Attack focus and add more box runs.
