4-4-2

4-4-2 Counter-Attack

Two compact banks of four absorb pressure, then a quick winger and a front two break at speed. The core pairing is a Target Forward holding the ball up while an Advanced Forward attacks the space behind.

Pros
  • Easy to understand and pick up
  • Two strikers pin both opposing centre-backs
  • Compact block holds up well against stronger sides
Cons
  • Only two central mids, so diamonds and 4-3-3s outnumber you
  • Low possession means more running and fatigue
  • Attacks stall if the first counter is blocked
Key Player Types
  • Strong, aerially dominant Target Forward
  • Advanced Forward with pace (Rapid+ PlayStyle)
  • Two high-stamina central mids who can defend
  • Traditional winger with pace and crossing
Player Instructions
  1. Once you win the ball, aim to get a shot off within two or three passes.
  2. Play into the Target Forward's feet, then lob a through ball for the Advanced Forward's run.
  3. Keep the line around 45 and the two banks tight when defending.
  4. Mix patterns: left winger goes outside and crosses, right inside forward cuts in.
  5. Facing a three-man midfield, drop one striker to help or switch to 4-4-1-1.
