5-2-1-2

5-2-1-2 Low-Block Counter (Underdog)

A survival plan for underdogs: five at the back shut down the edge of the box, then the Playmaker, front two and an Attacking Wingback break quickly on turnovers. Especially effective for relegation-threatened or lower-league career starts.

Pros
  • Drastically cuts chances conceded inside the box
  • No space in behind, so pacey forwards are neutralised
  • Organisation compensates for weaker ratings
Cons
  • Expect long spells without the ball
  • Vulnerable to long-range shots
  • Few ways to score if the counter is stopped
Key Player Types
  • Three centre-backs strong in the air and in the tackle (Block PlayStyle)
  • Attacking Wingback with pace and crossing
  • Target Forward who holds the ball up
  • Playmaker with a good through ball
Player Instructions
  1. Don't dive into tackles - jockey and simply block shooting angles.
  2. After winning the ball, play straight into the Target Forward and let the Attacking Wingback sprint down the right.
  3. The Stopper steps up early to disrupt strikers receiving with their back to goal.
  4. Once ahead, switch the Attacking Wingback to a regular Wingback to shore up the back five.
  5. Keep the Holding midfielder parked at the edge of the box to block long shots.
