Midfield is where your Career Mode team gets its identity. The player who builds from the back, the one who wins the ball, and the one who arrives in the box to finish are all called "midfielders", yet they need completely different attributes. So before you chase the biggest potential number, decide which role you are actually signing for.

Below are the best CDM, CM and CAM players aged 23 or under in the FC 27 squad file, sorted by potential (POT).

OVR, POT and attributes come from the FC 27 squad file. Transfer fees are estimates based on overall, potential and age; the real asking price in your save will depend on the selling club and contract. Attributes are given as PAC, SHO, PAS, DRI, DEF and PHY.

The top five are already rated 86 or higher — they are less "wonderkids" than established world-class players, with estimated fees of €83M to €150M. Unless you manage a super-club, the realistic targets start from sixth place down.

Defensive midfielders — the ball-winners

• João Neves (PSG, 21) is a true box-to-box engine: 86 DEF and 82 PHY alongside 84 PAS and 87 DRI. He carries Tiki Taka+ and is signed until 2031.
• A. Bouaddi (Man City, 18) goes 80 → 88 (+8). Jockey, Intercept and Press Proven make him a natural holding midfielder from day one.
• Marc Bernal (Barcelona, 19) is 78 → 88 (+10) and, at an estimated €29M, the cheapest 88-potential CDM on the list. His 79 PHY means he can already handle duels.

Central midfielders — the playmakers

• Pedri (Barcelona) is the best deep playmaker in the game: 89 PAS, 91 DRI and Pinged Pass+. He also covers CDM and CAM.
• A. Wharton (Crystal Palace, 22) has 85 PAS and Incisive Pass+, but only 54 PAC. Pair him with a mobile partner so counter-attacks don't run straight past him.
• V. Froholdt (Porto, 20) has no weak spot: 79 / 76 / 76 / 81 / 78 / 80 across the six face stats.
• W. Zaïre-Emery (PSG, 20) plays CM and RB. With 85 PHY and 79 DEF he doubles as full-back cover, which saves you a squad slot.

Attacking midfielders — the goal threats

• J. Bellingham (Real Madrid) is a scoring No. 10: 86 SHO, 85 PHY and Low Driven Shot+.
• J. Musiala (Bayern) has 90 DRI and Technical+, ideal for slipping through tight spaces.
• Nico Paz (Como) and K. Yıldız (Juventus) are both 21, 84 → 89, around €62M. Yıldız adds 85 PAC and Quick Step and can play LM; Paz's contract ends in 2028, which gives you some negotiating leverage.
• Rodrigo Mora (Roma, 19) and K. Karetsas (Dortmund, 18) have the biggest growth in the top 15 (+11 and +12). Both have DEF of 40 or lower, so keep them in advanced roles.

• K. Eichhorn (Leverkusen, 16) offers 88 potential — the same ceiling as Bouaddi and Bernal — for about a fifth of the price. He already has Long Ball Pass.
• J. Lerma (Dortmund) and A. Ouazane (Ajax) are 87-potential attackers at €5.7M. Ouazane's deal runs only to 2028.
• Borussia Dortmund has three of these ten (Lerma, Kaba, dos Santos) plus Karetsas from the main list. Starting a save at Dortmund gives you four midfield prospects out of the box.
• A. Alcaraz (Argentinos Juniors, 16) is the cheapest long-term project: €1.7M with +27 growth. His contract expires in 2027.

Tips for developing young midfielders

2. Value versatility. Players like Zaïre-Emery (CM/RB) or Froholdt (CM/CDM/CAM) cover injuries and rotation without extra signings.
3. Check defensive numbers on attacking prospects. Mora and Karetsas belong at CAM or out wide, not in a two-man central midfield.
